Vertcoin is GPU Mineable Bitcoin

Verthash is currently in testing

What is Vertcoin?

Vertcoin is different. Unlike many other coins you will see on this forum, Vertcoin has a purpose, a goal which drives the community and developers to constantly innovate. Committed to the decentralisation Satoshi originally dreamed of, Vert has consistently evolved over time to combat the threats to this dream. As a result, one of our main features is ASIC resistance, having forked successfully to a new proof of work algorithm called "Lyra2RE" upon discovering that Scrypt-N ASICs were being developed, and Lyra2reV2 after discovering a botnet. We believe that by keeping the mining process in the hands of those with generalised, low-risk, consumer grade hardware, we can lower the entry requirement for miners, increasing the number of individuals mining the coin which in turn leads to true decentralisation.

Our primary innovations

Current hashing algorithm: Lyra2REv3

Old White paper: https://vertcoin.org/downloads/Vertcoin_Lyra2RE_Paper_11292014.pdf

Our revolutionary new proof of work algorithm, designed to be ASIC resistant at its core, made its debut at block 208301. In addition, responding to calls from our miners, Lyra2RE has a ~15% power usage reduction on X11. Lyra2RE has replaced Scrypt-N, our previous proof of work and a Vertcoin innovation in itself, in order to defeat the ASIC miners that were released for it. The fork has successfully been carried out, once again making Vertcoin a decentralised, ASIC-free zone and fulfilling Vertcoin's promise to hard-fork if an ASIC threat becomes apparent, a promise which Litecoin made, but didn't deliver on.

Technical Details:

Algorithm: Lyra2REv3 Max Coins: 84 million.
Block time: 2.5 minutes
Subsidy halves every 840,000 blocks (~4 years)
Difficulty Re-Target Time: Every block with KGW algorithm
Block Rewards: 25 coins per block

Premine - None

There is no premine except three, normal blocks done to test the network (150 coins).  You can use the block explorer below to look them up.  Unlike many other coins, no one has received a large amount of free coins to dump on an exchange.

It is recommended that you mine on P2Pool as it helps to decentralize the network, there are often no fees and no account is required.

"Please update wallets immediately to avoid losing coins"

I don't understand this part. It's a softfork right?
Are people really losing coins or is it just something to say to make people update?

If that's it, haha pretty creative I guess.

I think it's just hyperbole to get people to update, but maybe miners could get screwed if they don't update?

miners will not be forked off of the network. Segwit uses BIP9 versionbits

Well with wrong code they hard forked their coin the last time.
Everyone had to downgrade.

So I'm asking, is this the Segwit with wrong code & just hardfork because YOLO or is it a cool marketing stunt?

Well after we reach the 75% threshold the new rules will activate and old version blocks will start to be orphaned, so there is a danger of coin loss if you don't upgrade your wallet. This is the release with the correct code.

Softfork means it is backwards compatible with old wallets. So are we hardforking (not compatible with old wallets) instead of softfork now?

There is almost no doubt that Segwit will be adopted by the network.
But the position of large exchanges is unclear. It's time to contact them.

Old wallets will continue to sync with the chain and be able to issue transactions but newly generated blocks coming from old wallets (ie blocks with nVersion 4 or less) will no longer be accepted as valid after activation. This is the same behavior as Bitcoin/Litecoin.

What you are saying in ELI5: It is not mandatory to upgrade but recommended. Except for the solo miners and pools.
Normal users (non miners) won't be generating new blocks hence they can stay on old wallets. Why do you give them the suggestion that they will loose coins?

The warning is for everybody. Like James said If exchanges, miners, and pools are using old wallets they will continue to sync with the chain and be able to issue transactions but newly generated blocks coming from old wallets (ie blocks with nVersion 4 or less) will no longer be accepted as valid after activation. This is the same behavior as Bitcoin/Litecoin. In short you could be getting blocks or coins on the old wallet , but if you transfer them to a new wallet they would be rejected, hence how you could loose coins.

Normal users (non miners) won't be generating new blocks hence they can stay on old wallets. Why do you give them the suggestion that they will loose coins?

Well since old wallets don't properly understand the new rules, they are trusting the miners that the chain is valid. Old wallets cannot verify the rules themselves and thus you effectively lose your status as a full node. Thus it opens you up to all kinds of attacks that are possible when you can't fully verify the rules yourself. But yes, objectively speaking it is not mandatory that normal users update, but you potentially risk your coins if you don't.
