Backyard Brews is a hidden gem in the alleys right off of California Ave. The road has been secured for al dente dining, so the road to get here IS somewhat closed to the public -- however, DO NOT FEAR! This coffee shop is bustling and is quite outdoors like no other. The serene sound of the fountains and the hustle and bustle of local businesses bring buzz and light to this hidden gem.
I love how it despite being outdoors, they still worked hard to make the best banana bread latte and croissant. Despite it being a little small, it didn't really matter much because the coffee beans that they used were quite "arabica".... with really strong coffee smell.
It gives a sense of community, and the coffee shop wasn't too crowded at all. Kids were coming in and out with their families and it just makes sense to me that they did open an outdoor coffee shop like Backyard Brew did. Locally owned businesses for the win!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Carlota ..San Francisco, CA146Apr 2, 2024
Small coffee gem with limited range of food options located at a cozy backyard right off Cal Ave.
Ordered a golden latten and a salmon toast and I must say everything was delicious. The coffee had a very good balance between the turmeric and the honey which made this special drink delicious. The salmon toast was also very good with a good amount of salmon. However, I felt like the portion was slightly too small.
The coffee shop was very busy on a Sunday morning but service was rather friendly and efficient.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 7, 2024
I've had this place bookmarked to check out and finally was down the street to check it out.
Walked through the hallway and found the menu right before you enter. It was late in the afternoon so opted for a Chai to not be overly caffeinated LOL. Ordering was a breeze and had to use the restroom that was off to the side while I waited. I could smell coffee beans roasting and when I walked out I saw a man roasting coffee beans. Got to talking with one of the barista about the business what's popular and where to park (right behind the building). The chai was fine. Nothing out of this world.
Cool space. Plenty of tables and chairs to sit. Space can feel crowded when busy. Menu visible to pick what to order ahead of time. Will need to come back and try their latte to have a better idea of the coffee here.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - May 12, 2024
I was in the area for work purposes and wanted a coffee since it was the late afternoon. I came by here not sure what to expect and really enjoyed the outside ambiance and the relaxed feel. I am always on the lookout for banana espresso drinks and they have one here that's amazing. It's the Banana Bread Latte and I highly recommend it iced with oat milk! It's pricey ($7 after tip and taxes) but with inflation that's common these days. I am a fan and would definitely come back.

Came by for coffee the other day and it was a decent experience. Backyard Brew is tucked away and is accessed via an alley off of California Ave.
The coffee shop itself has plenty of tables to hang out along with pastries for sale.
Ordered a nutella mocha and it came out tasty. Temperature of the latte was perfect and the espresso was smooth. The foam on top was great too!
$6 for a nutella mocha. They take credit cards too!Helpful 5Thanks 2Love this 6Oh no 0Oct 23, 2021Previous reviewCame by for coffee the other day and it was a decent experience. Backyard brew is accessed via an alley off of California Ave.
Ordering is done at the bar where none of the workers wore masks (it was an "outdoor" bar) or via an app for a more socially distanced method.
Started off with the beignets which were okay. They came straight out of the display case and were cool and lightly dusted. They did have 3 flavors of cream in them though.
The nutella mocha was okay. The temperature was good and the latte art was...different... The espresso was smooth. The coffee was decent.
The entire "coffee shop" vibe was unique in the sense that it was a restaurant's "backyard". Patrons were enjoying coffee underneath tents.
They do take credit cards. - Ankita G.San Francisco Bay Area, CA1062416May 3, 2024

Great flavor combinations for teas and pancakes.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 29, 2023
The store is popular. In the early morning, there are a lot of people who are waiting in line. The store is not fancy but they allow you to DIY your coffee. I tried a coffee that I had never tasted before the flavor to me is strange. They have a lot of tables.
Nice place for friends to meet and talk.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 131104134Nov 4, 2023
I recently found out about this place while I was in the area. This place had a very chill vibe to it and made the perfect place to a study session, hangout with friends, or a coffee break. I ordered their Rose latte and also tried the Za'atar Mozzarella puff. The coffee had a strong rose flavor which was so refreshing and a nice treat. Drinks were made almost instantly and my food was warmed up all within a couple minutes. There is wifi available for all guests and connection was pretty strong even outside their main seating area. A minor problem was a swarm of flies that failed to leave me alone.
There is plenty of seating despite it being busy throughout my time there. Parking is available on the street or in the parking garage which is adjacent to the shop. I really like the area around the coffee shop as there is always something going on and plenty of other food options as well. I look forward to coming back to try their other coffees and pastries.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - Sep 5, 2023
A cup of coffee is always enhanced by the atmosphere and the vibe around. Even more so when there is a pour over involved and a little roaster on site.
Backyard brew is a unison of all this more and even the little alley to get to the counter fills you with such anticipation that you can not resist thinking that's your special place.
Yemen coffee hits the spot and you can spend hours there.
So grab a seat and chill out at the backyard.
P.S. shout out to Patrick who was roasting beans from Rwanda that they get in a little truck from Oakland Harbor!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1
