In 2021, the State Hermitage will hold an exhibition of works of art made in the non-fungible token (NFT) format.
The museum’s Department of Contemporary Art is working on the exhibition, which will be part of the Hermitage 20/21 project.
This Hermitage project will be the first exhibition in Russia to explore the field of NFTs and their use in art, which is today the issue of highest current interest on the contemporary art agenda. Non-fungible tokens have become a new way of assigning rights to a work of art, using blockchain technology to establish unambiguous control over copyright and ownership.
The exhibition will be a continuation of the State Hermitage’s work on new forms of art that began with the exhibitions “Innovation as an Artistic Technique” (2018) and “Artificial Intelligence and the Dialogue of Cultures” (2019) held in conjunction with RDI.Creative, and seminars organized by the museum and ITMO University
The Aksenov Family Foundation will be a strategic partner of the new project. The objective of many of the foundation’s projects is to research forms of engaging an audience in new cultural practices.
